Job offer - Building Inspector

Under the responsibility of the Planning Director, the Building Inspector performs a variety of tasks, such as reviewing construction plans, issuing construction permits, inspecting buildings, and enforcing various municipal and provincial bylaws. This role involves working closely with the general public, municipal and provincial employees, and the construction industry. This position requires the use of computers for data entry and report writing.

Specifically, the building inspector will have the following tasks:

  • Complete construction permit applications, review plans and specifications, and ensure that the proposed work complies with municipal and provincial regulations, as well as the National Building Code.
  • Contact other departments or agencies when a construction permit falls under another law or jurisdiction: fire marshal, Department of Health, Department of Environment, local governments, Department of Transportation, NB Tel, NB911, etc.
  • Issue and sign construction permits.
  • Conduct building inspections when required and ensure that construction complies with municipal and provincial regulations, as well as the standards and conditions indicated on the permit.
  • Conduct regular district tours to ensure that permits have been issued for ongoing construction.
  • Refuse to issue a permit or issue a stop-work order for non-compliant constructions with current regulations.
  • Consult with the director for procedures to follow in cases of violations.
  • Maintain a record of construction permits and produce construction reports as requested.
  • Prepare applications to be submitted for approval by the planning department (variance, temporary use, etc.) and follow up.
  • Perform all other tasks normally related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Hold a college diploma in a related field, e.g., civil engineering technology (CET), building technology, architecture, construction, trades, etc.
  • Have a very good knowledge of the National Building Code.
  • Be qualified and certified, or in the process of being certified by the New Brunswick Building Officials Association (NBBOA).

Remuneration:

  • Varies from $55,925 to $68,751 per year depending on qualifications and the current salary scale. The Chaleur Regional Service Commission offers a range of competitive benefits, including clothing, life, medical and dental insurance, and a retirement plan.

Work Schedule:

  • Thirty-five (35) hours per week over five days. This position may involve working outside regular office hours to attend meetings of the regional service commission, municipal councils, planning committees, public meetings, special projects, etc. Overtime hours are compensated with equivalent time off.
